After annoying each other for a bit Tristan makes a deal with Yvaine that if she allows him to take her to Victoria he will give her the last bit of his Babylon candle so she can get home. So he does and instead ends up landing on Yvaine, the star that fell from the sky after a weird stone necklace hit her. She has left him with a Babylon candle, a magic candle that will transport him to her if he thinks of her.

He gives Tristan a piece of the silver chain that he had cut off of Una in attempt to free her as well as the glass snowdrop and a letter from his mother. His father tells him about his adventure over the wall and shows him the basket that he had arrived in. Tristan attempt to cross the wall but the guard is ready for him and he heads home defeated. That is when they see a shooting stall and Tristan makes a deal with her that she will marry him if he brings her that star. Shocked and scrambling to win her heart, he swears that he would travel the world to get her a ring. She enjoys her time talking with him about the adventures he wishes to take, she admits that Humphrey is going all the way to the major city to buy her a ring. He takes her to a candle light field that he has decorated with lit candles and picnic blanket an champagne. It seems that she decides to ignore him but in the end she does come outside to see his surprise. He tells her he has a surprise and waits for her. So Tristan once again goes to Victoria’s window to call on her. He loses his job and confides into his father his lack of confidence in being the man for Victoria, his father encourages him to try again. She cuts in-front of the line of those he is waiting on and uses his affection to get the things she needs as well as to have him carry her things home. The next day he is at his job at the grocer’s and we get to see Victoria’s personality for what it really is and Tristan can’t see. They attempt to duel though Tristan does horribly.
He attempts to woo her at her window but is humiliated instead when Victoria’s other suitor, Humphrey, calls as well.
His ghost appears with four of his other brothers who are also deceased and cannot rest until a new King is decided.Īt the same time this is happening, Tristan has grown up and is in love with a girl named Victoria. One of his sons runs to the window to see where it may have fallen only to be pushed out of the tower window by his older brother. He then throws it out his window and it heads towards the starlit sky. He states that the one who can find this stone and restore it will be the new king. The King, however, has his own twist this time, he takes off the red magical stone around his neck, it drains of color. The tradition in the family is to kill off any male heirs until the last remains, and therefore becomes king. His four sons and missing daughter are the only survivors of his blood line. Twenty years later, the King of Stormhold is on his death bed. She invites him inside the caravan and nine months later Tristan, a baby boy is left for him by the wall and delivered to his home by the guard. The girl explains that she is a princess sold to the witch who owns this stall and won’t be free until Ditchwater Sal (the witch) Dunstan attempts to break the chain that binds her but is unable to do so. He agrees and does so, she turns to enter back into the yellow caravan when he notices a thin silver chain attached to her ankle. He asks for the blue ones but the assistant/slave girl insists that he take the snowdrop in exchange for a kiss. Dunstan is fascinated by what he sees but his gaze is captured by a young woman selling trinkets and glass flowers. A trading post with the most unusual object, for instance the first thing seen is a miniature elephant, the size of a bird, with two heads. He travels on and soon encounters a small place called Market Town. The guard mentions that there is nothing but a field and turns Dunstan away sending him home, but Dunstan is undeterred and races pace the guard and jumps through the wall’s opening. To get to the other side of the wall there was a section that had been broken and crumbled, which was now guarded by David Kelly (no character name given).

He then continues to introduce the backstory of the protagonist, Tristan Thorn. Tristan’s father Dunstan was curious about what laid beyond the wall that their town was named for. The scientist wrote back in the nicest way possible that the idea was absurd. Ian McKellen begins his narration with a small story about a young man from Wall Town who wrote a letter to the National Observatory in England, asking if it were possible that stars we looked at gazed back.
